BOMB / EOD Suit

Olympia™ Bomb / EOD Protective Suit
Available under NYS Contract # PC64787 USI

The OLYMPIA™ BOMB / EOD Protective Suit System is the complete EOD ensemble comprising of trousers, jacket with sleeves and collar, hand mitts, over boots, helmet with visor demister and integral communications.

The suit is constructed from NOMEX™ Delta T - certified flame retardant material and this material is also used to cover the ballistic helmet.

The zonal armor system provides optimum protection with maximum flexibility and comfort. The highest protection level is afforded to life critical areas of the body with V50 ranging from 4921 f/sec down to 1640 f/sec. These levels of protection can be adjusted to suit individual client needs.

Key features of the OLYMPIA™ EOD/BOMB SUIT:

  • 72 lbs for the entire system (with helmet) for the large suit (S-XXL)
  • Zoned armor system,
  • Integral groin/lower abdomen protector for enhanced protection,
  • Three part blast plates for increased protection to neck, chest & groin,
  • High performance helmet with visor, integral cooling and communications,
  • Two part knee joints for maximum flexibility and good maneuverability.
  • Meets or exceeds the latest NIJ Bomb Suit Standards.
  • Packs in a single case.
We have recently successfully completed a program of independent blast testing on our Olympia Bomb Suit. The testing was conducted by Ordnance Test Solutions (OTS), an independent research, test and evaluation company that specializes in the fields of blast and ballistic related events. Its staff are made up of technical experts with experiences from the fields of Defense Academia, Defense Government Research and the Defense Industry. OTS has conducted fully instrumented blast tests of bomb suits to measure injury to the lungs, ears, burns, whole body displacement, and integrity of the suit. OTS maintains links with organizations working in the fields of blast and ballistic assessment, allowing OTS to maintain information regarding the latest research into blast and ballistic assessments, including injury criteria.

The blast testing was initially conducted at a distance of 6.56 ft from a bare C4 explosive charge, suspended at a height of 3.28 ft, representing the approach of an EOD operator to an explosive device, and then at a distance of 1.64 ft at a height of .65 ft, representing a kneeling EOD operator when he is working on a device. In the first test there was no perceptible damage of any significance to the integrity of the bomb suit, while in the second the damage was mainly cosmetic and related only to the outer cover of the suit. In both instances substantial over-pressure reductions were achieved under the soft armor, under the combination of chest plate and soft armor, and in the helmet, indicating good survivability prospects for the occupant of the suit during a blast event.

Standards of Design:
Blast overpressure, fragmentation, impact and flame are hazards from which a bomb technician needs to be protected when performing render-safe procedures while wearing the bomb suit. The system provides protection to the head, face, neck, thorax/abdomen, pelvis, arms and legs of the technicians performing render-safe procedures and disposal activities. The standardized threat as indicated by the NIJ is the metal pipe bomb filled with black or smokeless powder.
  • Blast Overpressure
  • Fragmentation
  • Impact
  • Flame
  • Optics
  • Ergonomics

This suit balances the protection requirements against the bomb technician's need for mobility, clear vision and dexterity.

The Olympia™ outer shell provides a level of fire, ultraviolet, moisture and chemical resistance, and is manufactured from NOMEX™. Grey, Tan, Blue and Black are available colors.

Olympia Helmet:
Constructed from composite materials and is designed for multi-threat work environments; i.e. EOD/IED as well as CBRN.
The helmet has an extensively adjustable comfort liner system and is equipped with a 2-point retention system.
It features a helmet-mounted work area light powered by a supplemental power source and is rigged for Communications System fitment. The Comms interface is attached to the jacket. It has built-in ducting for the suit's positive-pressure cooling & demisting system which is also jacket-mounted. The blast-rated visor is not SCPA breathing apparatus (BA) friendly. Such a feature would lessen the blast-rating of the helmet system.

The air blower is an assisted air purification system. The filtering system consists of a waist mounted battery powered blower assembly and two high efficiency particulate (HE) filters.

The blower is powered by 2 Ni-MH 4.8-volt rechargeable batteries.
Weight of the system: 2.5 lbs.

The blower provides a minimum of 6 cubic feet per minute constant air flow through the helmet and over the visor. This prevents misting up and provides cooling. The shielded blower motor will not interfere with radio communications. The onboard battery will provide up to 10-hrs of run time. Blower life is 3000-hrs.

MIL-STD-662F Military Standards for Fragmentation Protection

Ballistic limit. The minimum velocity at which a particular projectile is expected to consistently, completely penetrate armor of given thickness and physical properties at a specified angle of obliquity. The ballistic limit may also be defined as the maximum velocity at which a particular projectile is expected to consistently fail to penetrate armor of given thickness and physical properties at a specified angle of obliquity. Because of the expense of firing tests and the impossibility of controlling striking velocity precisely, plus the existence of a zone of mixed results in which a projectile may completely penetrate or only partially penetrate under apparently identical conditions, statistical approaches are necessary, based upon limited firings.

Definition of Terms:

  • V0 rating - the maximum velocity at which no complete penetration will occur.
  • V50 rating - the velocity at which complete penetration and incomplete penetration are equally likely to occur.
  • V100 rating - the minimum velocity at which all projectiles will completely penetrate.

Fragmentation:
This threat is now part of the N.I.J. standard as developed at the request of the National Bomb Squad Commanders Advisory Board (NBSCAB). Fragmentation body armor is not always designed to prevent penetration of bullets, but to capture jagged fragments of metal and shrapnel. This type of body armor is tested using the U.S. military standard 662F determine the V50 rating. Fragmentation resistance (V50) as tested with .22 Caliber, 17 grain Fragment Simulated Projectile (FSP), according to STANAG 2920 and US MIL STD 662F.

The FSP is a standardized projectile that is used to simulate a fragment of an antipersonnel/anti-armor mine.
